The prostate is a vital component of the masculine sexual organs. The prostate is mistakenly known as the prostrate gland. The prostate's principle function is to produce and store a see-through fluid that is part of semen (seminal fluid). A normal individual's prostate gland is somewhat heftier in size than a walnut. The prostate surrounds the urethra beneath the bladder. It is located in front of the rectal area and a portion of it can be felt during the normal course of a rectal exam or evaluation.

Inflammation of the prostate gland is called prostatitis. If the prostate becomes enlarged it can hinder the flow of urine, making urination difficult and very painful and in extreme cases wholly impassable. Prostatitis is treated with antibiotics, massage of the prostate or even surgical procedures.

In men who are elderly, the prostate can enlarge to the point where urinating becomes difficult or impossible. This is referred to as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). It can be treated with the use of medication or with even surgical procedures that removes a component of the prostate. One common surgery used in such cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TUR or TURP).

Prostatic gland cancer is one of the most commonplace cancers that affects older-aged males and a major cause of dying. Regular rectal exams are medically recommended to pick up prostate cancer before it spreads. There is also also a blood test that can measure the amount of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which should normally be very low. Elevated bloodwork PSA results may signify disorder in the prostate, either prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or prostate cancer. The PSA test cannot distinguish between them, but can cause your doctor to investigate more thoroughly. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or even operations. It has just recently been noted that medicines like Docetaxel may be useful in treating a cancerous prostate.

Stimulation of the prostate gland in men has been compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can result in a more powerful orgasm. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate whether for clinical value or primarily for sexual purposes.
