The prostate is a vital component of the masculine sex organs. The prostate gland is mistakenly called the prostrate, rather than prostate. The prostate's most significant function is to produce and then store a clear liquid that is a vital component of semen (seminal fluid). A healthy human prostate gland is somewhat heftier in size than a walnut. It surrounds the urethra below the urinary bladder. It is also located in front of the rectum and part of it can be felt during the course of a rectal exam or evaluation.

Inflammation in the prostate gland is known as prostatitis. If the prostate grows too much in size it can obstruct the flow of urine, making urination painful and difficult and in severe cases totally impossible. Prostatitis can be treated with antibiotic drugs, massage of the prostate or even surgery.

In men who are elderly, the prostate may grow to the point where urinating is difficult. This is called benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH. It can be treated with different types of medicinal drugs or with surgery that removes a portion of the prostate. One common operation used in such cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP or TUR).

Cancer of the prostate is one of the most common cancers to affect older-aged men and a major cause of death. Consistent rectal exams are medically recommended to pick up prostate cancer in the early stages. There is also also a blood evaluation that can measure the amount of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is, in normal men, very low. Elevated test results may indicate a disorder within the prostate, either prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or a cancerous prostate. The PSA test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can be a reason for your doctor to investigate more thoroughly. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or operations. It has recently been uncovered that medications like Docetaxel may be useful in the treatment of prostate cancer.

Stimulation of the prostate gland in men is often compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can lead to more powerful orgasm. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate either for clinical value or just for sexual fulfillment.
