The prostate gland is part of the male sexual organs. It is mistakenly known as the prostrate gland. The prostate gland's most paramount role is to secrete and then store a transparent fluid that is a component of seminal fluid. A sound man's prostate is slightly larger in size than a shelled walnut. The prostate surrounds the urethra beneath the bladder. It is also positioned in front of the rectal area and a portion of it can be felt while undergoing the rectal examination.

Inflammation of the prostate gland is referred to as prostatitis. If the prostate grows too enlarged it can stop up the flow of urine, making urination very painful and more difficult and in very severe situations wholly impossible. Prostatitis can usually be treated with antibiotic medications, massage of the prostate or operations.

In older males, the prostate can grow to the point where urinating becomes difficult or impossible. This is commonly known as bPH or benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can be treated with medicines or with operations that removes a component of the prostate. One very typical operation used in these types of cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TUR or TURP).

Prostatic gland cancer is one of the most commonplace cancers affecting elderly males and a major cause of deaths. Consistent rectal exams are highly recommended to uncover prostate cancer early. There can be also a laboratory blood evaluation that will measure the amount of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which should normally be quite low. Elevated blood PSA results might signal disorder within the prostate, either prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or prostate cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between them, but can be grounds for a physician to investigate with additional tests. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or even surgical measures. It has only recently been observed that drugs such as Docetaxel can sometimes be effective in treating cancer.

Stimulating the prostate in men has been compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can result in a more powerful experience of orgasm. Prostate massage or milking refers to massage of the prostate whether for health-related or strictly sexual purposes.
