The prostate is a vital component of the male sex organs. The prostate gland is mistakenly known as the prostrate. The prostate's most significant function is to produce and then store a see-through fluid that is a vital component of seminal fluid or semen. A non-diseased man's prostate is a little bit bigger in size than a shelled walnut. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra below the bladder. It is also situated in front of the rectal area and part of it can be felt while undergoing a rectal examination.

Inflammation of the prostate is a gland that is known as prostatitis. If the prostate becomes too enlarged it can impede the urine stream, making urination painful and difficult and in severe situations entirely impassable. Prostatitis can be treated with antibiotics, massage of the prostate or even surgery.

In older-aged males, the prostate can enlarge to the point where urinating becomes difficult or impossible. This is named bPH or benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can be treated with the use of medications or with surgical measures that removes part of the prostate. One very typical surgery used in such cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TUR or TURP).

Prostatic gland cancer is one of the most frequent cancers that strikes older men and a major cause of death. Consistent rectal exams are highly recommended to pick up prostate cancer in the early stages. There is also a laboratory blood test that measures the amount of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is normally quite low. Elevated bloodwork PSA results might suggest disease in the prostate, whether prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or prostate cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can cause a physician to investigate even further. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or even surgical procedures. It has only recently been noted that medicines like Docetaxel can be useful in treating prostate cancer.

Stimulating the prostate in men has been compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can cause more powerful sexual climax. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massage of the prostate either for clinical or for strictly sexual purposes.
