The prostate is really a gland that is part of the male sexual organs. The prostate gland is mistakenly known as the prostrate, rather than prostate. Its primary job is to produce and then store a clear liquid that is part of semen (seminal fluid). A non-diseased man's prostate is a little bit bigger than a walnut. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra underneath the bladder. It is located in front of the rectal region and a portion of it can be felt while undergoing a rectal exam or evaluation.

Inflammation in the prostate is a gland that is referred to as prostatitis. If the prostate grows too enlarged it can jam up urine flow, making urination difficult and very painful and in extreme situations completely impassable. Prostatitis is treated with antibiotic prescription medications, massage of the prostate or surgical procedures.

In men who are elderly, the prostate often enlarges to the point where urination is difficult. This is termed benign prostatic hyperplasia, commonly called BPH. It can be treated with medicines or with even surgical procedures that removes part of the prostate. One commonplace surgical procedure used in such cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TURP or TUR).

Prostatic gland cancer is one of the most frequent cancers to affect older men and a major cause of dying. Regular rectal exams are medically recommended to discover prostate cancer in the early stages. There is also a blood evaluation that will measure the concentration of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is also normally very low. Raised pSA blood results can indicate a disorder in the prostate, whether prostatitis, bPH or a cancerous prostate. The PSA test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can be a reason for your doctor to investigate even further. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or even surgical measures. It has only recently been detected that medicines such as Docetaxel could be useful in treating a cancerous prostate.

Stimulation of the prostate in men is frequently compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can result in a more powerful orgasm. Prostate massage or milking refers to massage of the prostate whether for health-related or strictly for sexual fulfillment.
