The prostate is a component of the masculine sex organs. The prostate gland is mistakenly called the prostrate. Its overriding function is to first secrete and then store a see-through fluid that is a vital component of seminal fluid (semen). A normal man's prostate gland is slightly larger than a shelled walnut. The prostate surrounds the urethra beneath the bladder. It is located in front of the rectal region and a portion of it can be felt while undergoing the rectal part of the exam.

Inflammation of the prostate gland is named prostatitis. If the prostate becomes enlarged it can occlude the flow of urine, making urination difficult and painful and in extreme situations wholly impossible. Prostatitis can be treated with antibiotic prescription drugs, prostate massage or surgical measures.

In men who are elderly, the prostate can enlarge to the point where urinating is difficult. This is termed benign prostatic hyperplasia, commonly termed BPH. It can be treated with different types of prescription medications or with surgical measures that removes a component of the prostate. One common surgery used in these types of cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP or TUR).

Prostatic cancer is one of the most commonplace cancers to affect older men and a leading cause of deaths. Regular rectal exams are medically recommended to discover prostate cancer in the early stages. There is also a lab blood test that measures the amount of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which can be normally very low. Raised blood PSA results might signify disorder within the prostate, whether prostatitis, bPH or prostate cancer. The PSA test cannot distinguish between them, but can cause your physician to investigate with additional tests. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or operations. It has recently been observed that drugs like Docetaxel can be effective in the treatment of prostate cancer.

Stimulation of the prostate in males is typically compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can cause more powerful sexual climax. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massage of the prostate whether for clinical or just for sexual fulfillment.
