The prostate is really a gland that is part of the masculine sex organs. It is mistakenly known as the prostrate, rather than prostate. Its most paramount function is to produce and store a see-through fluid that is part of semen. A sound human's prostate gland is a little bit greater in size than a shelled walnut. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra beneath the urinary bladder. It is positioned in front of the rectal region and part of it can be felt during the course of a rectal exam.

Inflammation of the prostate gland is referred to as prostatitis. If the prostate grows enlarged it can obstruct the flow of urine, making urination very painful and more difficult and in severe instances totally impassable. Prostatitis can be treated with antibiotic prescription drugs, massage of the prostate or surgery.

In older males, the prostate can grow to the point where urination becomes difficult or impossible. This is commonly known as benign prostatic hyperplasia, commonly termed BPH. It can be treated with prescription medications or with even operations that removes a component of the prostate. One commonplace operation used in these types of cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TURP or TUR).

Prostatic gland cancer is one of the most common cancers to affect elderly men and a leading cause of dying. Consistent rectal exams are recommended to uncover prostate cancer before it spreads. There is also a blood test that will measure the amount of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is normally quite low. Elevated pSA blood results could suggest disorder in the prostate, either prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between them, but can lead your doctor to investigate more closely. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or surgical procedures. It has just recently been found that medicines like Docetaxel can sometimes be helpful in treating prostate cancer.

Stimulating the prostate in men is often compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can lead to more powerful experience of orgasm. Prostate massage or milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate either for clinical value or just for sexual purposes.
