The prostate is really a gland that is a component of the masculine sex organs. The prostate is mistakenly known as the prostrate. The prostate's leading job is to first produce and then store a transparent liquid that is a component of seminal fluid. A non-diseased man's prostate is a bit bigger in size than a shelled walnut. It surrounds the urethra underneath the urinary bladder. It is positioned in front of the rectal region and part of it can be felt while undergoing a rectal examination.

Inflammation in the prostate is a gland that is referred to as prostatitis. If the prostate becomes enlarged too much it can stop up the flow of urine, making urination painful and difficult and in extreme instances totally impossible. Prostatitis can often be treated with antibiotic medications, prostate massage or surgical measures.

In older males, the prostate often enlarges to the point where urinating is difficult. This is named benign prostatic hyperplasia, commonly called BPH. It can be treated with medicines or with surgical procedures that removes part of the prostate. One commonplace surgery used in such cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TUR or TURP).

Cancer of the prostate is one of the most common cancers to affect older-aged males and a major cause of dying. Consistent rectal exams are medically recommended to detect prostate cancer before it spreads. There is also a lab blood test that will measure the amount of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which should normally be quite low. Raised bloodwork PSA results may be an indicator of disorder within the prostate, either prostatitis, bPH or a cancerous prostate. The PSA test cannot distinguish between them, but can be grounds for a doctor to investigate further. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or even surgical measures. It has recently been noted that medicines like Docetaxel can be helpful in treating cancer.

Stimulating the prostate in men has been compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can lead to more powerful sexual climax. Prostate massage or milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate either for health-related or primarily for sexual purposes.
