The prostate gland is part of the masculine sex organs. The prostate is mistakenly called the prostrate gland. The prostate gland's paramount job is to secrete and store a transparent fluid that is an important part of semen (seminal fluid). A sound man's prostate gland is slightly greater in size than a walnut. It surrounds the urethra beneath the urinary bladder. Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers affecting elderly men and a leading cause of death. Consistent rectal exams are recommended to detect prostate cancer in the early stages. There can be also a laboratory blood test that can measure the concentration of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is, in normal men, very low. Elevated test results can highly suggest disorder inside the prostate, either prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or cancer. The PSA test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can be grounds for your physician to investigate more thoroughly. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or even operations. It has only recently been noticed that medicines such as Docetaxel may be helpful in the treatment of prostate cancer.
