The prostate is a component of the male sexual organs. The prostate is mistakenly called the prostrate, rather than prostate. The prostate's predominant function is to produce and store a clear liquid that is a component of semen. A non-diseased individual's prostate is slightly bigger in size than a shelled walnut. The prostate surrounds the urethra beneath the bladder. It is also situated in front of the rectal area and part of it can be felt while undergoing a rectal exam.

Inflammation in the prostate gland is termed prostatitis. If the prostate gets too enlarged it can occlude urine flow, making urination difficult and painful and in extreme cases totally impossible. Prostatitis can usually be treated with antibiotic drugs, prostate massage or even operations.

In older men, the prostate often enlarges to the point where urinating becomes difficult or impossible. This is termed benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH. It can be treated with prescription medications or with surgery that removes a portion of the prostate. One common operation used in such cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TUR or TURP).

Prostatic cancer is one of the most common cancers to strike older males and a major cause of dying. Consistent rectal exams are medically recommended to discover prostate cancer in the early stages. There is also also a laboratory blood test that measures the amount of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is, in normal men, very low. Raised blood PSA results might suggest disease in the prostate, either prostatitis, bPH or prostate cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can cause your doctor to investigate more thoroughly. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or even surgical measures. It has just recently been noted that drugs including Docetaxel may be effective in treating cancer.

Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate either for medical value or strictly for sexual fulfillment.
