The prostate is a gland that is a vital component of the masculine sexual organs. The prostate gland is mistakenly called the prostrate, rather than prostate. Its chief function is to first secrete and then store a clear fluid that is a component of semen. A normal human prostate is somewhat heftier in size than a shelled walnut. It surrounds the urethra just below the bladder. It is positioned in front of the rectum and a portion of it can be felt during the rectal exam.

Inflammation in the prostate gland is known as prostatitis. If the prostate grows too large it can stop up the flow of urine, making urination very painful and difficult and in extreme cases entirely impassable. Prostatitis is treated with antibiotic prescription medications, massage of the prostate or even surgery.

In men who are elderly, the prostate may grow to the point where urination becomes difficult. This is termed benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH. It can be treated with different types of medication or with even surgery that removes a portion of the prostate. One common surgical procedure used in such cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TUR or TURP).

Prostatic gland cancer is one of the most commonplace cancers affecting older men and a leading cause of death. Regular rectal exams are highly recommended to uncover prostate cancer early. There can be also a laboratory blood evaluation that measures the concentration of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is, in normal men, quite low. Elevated blood PSA results could be an indicator of disease in the prostate, whether prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or a cancerous prostate. The PSA test cannot distinguish between them, but can be a reason for a physician to investigate with further tests. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or even surgery. It has only recently been observed that medicines like Docetaxel may be useful in treating prostate cancer.

Stimulating the prostate in men is typically compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can result in a more powerful orgasm. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massage of the prostate either for clinical value or primarily for sexual fulfillment.
