The prostate is a gland that is a vital component of the male sexual organs. It is mistakenly known as the prostrate, rather than prostate. The prostate's most paramount function is to first produce and then store a clear liquid that is a component of semen, or seminal fluid. A normal man's prostate is a bit bigger in size than a walnut. It surrounds the urethra below the bladder. It is also positioned in front of the rectum and part of it can be felt while undergoing a rectal exam.

Inflammation in the prostate gland is called prostatitis. If the prostate becomes enlarged too much it can stop up the urine stream, making urination difficult and painful and in severe situations wholly impassable. Prostatitis can be treated with antibiotic medications, massage of the prostate or surgical procedures.

In men who are older, the prostate can grow to the point where urinating becomes difficult or impossible. This is named bPH or benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can be treated with different types of medication or with operations that removes part of the prostate. One commonplace surgical procedure used in these types of cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TURP or TUR).

Prostate cancer is one of the most commonplace cancers to affect older males and a leading cause of deaths. Regular rectal exams are medically recommended to find prostate cancer in the early stages. There can be also a blood test that will measure the concentration of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which should normally be quite low. Raised test results might signify disease inside the prostate, either prostatitis, bPH or cancer. The PSA test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can be grounds for a doctor to investigate more closely. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or surgery. It has just recently been found that drugs such as Docetaxel can sometimes be useful in the treatment of cancer.

Stimulation of the prostate in men is typically compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can result in a more powerful experience of orgasm. Prostate massage or milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate whether for clinical or strictly for sexual purposes.
