The prostate gland is a vital part of the sex organs of the male. The prostate gland is mistakenly known as the prostrate, rather than prostate. The prostate gland's most important role is to secrete and then store a transparent liquid that is a component of seminal fluid. A normal human's prostate is a bit larger in size than a shelled walnut. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra just below the urinary bladder. It is also situated in front of the rectal region and a portion of it can be felt during the course of the rectal part of the exam.

Inflammation of the prostate is a gland that is referred to as prostatitis. If the prostate becomes enlarged too much it can stop up urine flow, making urination difficult and painful and in severe instances wholly impossible. Prostatitis can be treated with antibiotic prescription medications, massage of the prostate or operations.

In men who are older, the prostate can grow to the point where urinating becomes difficult or impossible. This is referred to as benign prostatic hyperplasia, commonly called BPH. It can be treated with different types of medication or with surgery that removes a portion of the prostate. One commonplace surgical procedure used in such cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TUR or TURP).

Prostatic gland cancer is one of the most commonplace cancers that strikes elderly males and a leading cause of death. Regular rectal exams are medically recommended to discover prostate cancer in the early stages. There can be also a laboratory blood evaluation that can measure the amount of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which should normally be quite low. Raised test results can be an indicator of disorder within the prostate, either prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or prostate cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can be grounds for your physician to investigate with further tests. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or even surgical procedures. It has recently been noted that medications such as Docetaxel may be useful in the treatment of prostate cancer.

Stimulation of the prostate in men is frequently compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can lead to more powerful orgasm. Prostate massage or milking refers to massage of the prostate whether for medical value or primarily for sexual fulfillment.
