The prostate is a gland that is an important part of the sex organs of the male. The prostate gland is mistakenly called the prostrate, rather than prostate. The prostate's primary function is to produce and store a clear fluid that is part of seminal fluid or semen. A non-diseased individual's prostate gland is a bit heftier in size than a shelled walnut. It surrounds the urethra beneath the bladder. It is situated in front of the rectal area and a portion of it can be felt during a rectal exam.

Inflammation in the prostate gland is termed prostatitis. If the prostate becomes enlarged too much it can block urine flow, making urination painful and difficult and in extreme situations totally impassable. Prostatitis can usually be treated with antibiotic prescription medications, prostate massage or even surgery.

In men who are older, the prostate may enlarge to the point where urinating is difficult. This is termed benign prostatic hyperplasia, commonly called BPH. It can be treated with the use of medications or with operations that removes part of the prostate. One very typical operation used in such cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP or TUR).

Prostatic cancer is one of the most frequent cancers to strike older-aged males and a major cause of death. Regular rectal exams are medically recommended to pick up prostate cancer in the early stages. There can be also a blood evaluation that measures the concentration of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which is, in normal men, very low. Elevated test results can indicate a disorder in the prostate, either prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or a cancerous prostate. The PSA test cannot distinguish between them, but can be a reason for your doctor to investigate more thoroughly. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or even surgical measures. It has just recently been noted that medications like Docetaxel can sometimes be helpful in treating prostate cancer.

Stimulating the prostate gland in males is frequently compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can cause more powerful orgasm. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate either for clinical or primarily for sexual fulfillment.
