The prostate is a vital part of the masculine sexual organs. It is mistakenly called the prostrate, rather than prostate. The prostate gland's chief job is to secrete and store a see-through fluid that is part of seminal fluid. A healthy individual's prostate is a bit heftier in size than a walnut. The prostate surrounds the urethra underneath the urinary bladder. It is located in front of the rectal area and part of it can be felt while undergoing the rectal exam.

Inflammation of the prostate gland is referred to as prostatitis. If the prostate becomes too enlarged it can block the flow of urine, making urination difficult and painful and in extreme cases totally impossible. Prostatitis can be treated with antibiotic medications, prostate massage or operations.

In older males, the prostate often enlarges to the point where urinating is difficult. This is called benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). It can be treated with the use of prescription medications or with even surgery that removes a component of the prostate. One common surgery used in such cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TURP or TUR).

Prostate cancer is one of the most commonplace cancers to affect older-aged males and a major cause of death. Regular rectal exams are recommended to pick up prostate cancer before it spreads. There is also also a blood evaluation that measures the amount of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which should normally be quite low. Raised blood PSA results can suggest disorder in the prostate, whether prostatitis, bPH or cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can be grounds for your doctor to investigate further. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or even surgical measures. It has recently been noted that medicines including Docetaxel may be useful in treating a cancerous prostate.

Stimulation of the prostate gland in males is often compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can result in a more powerful orgasm. Prostate massage or milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate whether for medical value or just for sexual purposes.
