The prostate gland is part of the sex organs of the male. The prostate is mistakenly known as the prostrate. Its principle function is to produce and store a transparent liquid that is an important part of seminal fluid (semen). A normal human prostate gland is somewhat greater in size than a shelled walnut. It surrounds the urethra just below the bladder. It is also situated in front of the rectum and part of it can be felt during the normal course of the rectal part of the exam.

Inflammation of the prostate is a gland that is named prostatitis. If the prostate grows too enlarged it can obstruct urine flow, making urination painful and difficult and in very severe instances completely impossible. Prostatitis can often be treated with antibiotic drugs, prostate massage or even surgical procedures.

In elderly males, the prostate can enlarge to the point where urination becomes difficult. This is commonly known as bPH or benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can be treated with medication or with surgery that removes a portion of the prostate. One commonplace operation used in these types of cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TUR or TURP).

Cancer of the prostate gland is one of the most common cancers that strikes elderly men and a leading cause of deaths. Regular rectal exams are medically recommended to uncover prostate cancer early. There can be also a laboratory blood evaluation that will measure the amount of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is, in normal men, very low. Raised bloodwork PSA results may signify disease within the prostate, whether prostatitis, bPH or prostate cancer. The PSA test cannot distinguish between them, but can lead your physician to investigate further. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or surgery. It has only recently been detected that drugs like Docetaxel can be helpful in the treatment of prostate cancer.

Stimulating the prostate in males has been compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can lead to more powerful experience of orgasm. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massage of the prostate whether for clinical or just for sexual fulfillment.
