The prostate is a gland that is a component of the male sexual organs. The prostate is mistakenly known as the prostrate gland. Its most significant function is to produce and store a see-through liquid that is an important part of seminal fluid (semen). A normal individual's prostate is a bit larger in size than a walnut. It surrounds the urethra underneath the bladder. It is located in front of the rectum and a portion of it can be felt during a rectal examination.

Inflammation in the prostate is a gland that is named prostatitis. If the prostate becomes too enlarged it can stop the urine stream, making urination very painful and more difficult and in severe instances completely impossible. Prostatitis can be treated with antibiotic medications, massage of the prostate or even surgery.

In men who are older, the prostate may grow to the point where urinating becomes difficult or impossible. This is termed benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH. It can be treated with different types of medicines or with surgical measures that removes a portion of the prostate. One commonplace operation used in these types of cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP or TUR).

Prostatic cancer is one of the most commonplace cancers to strike elderly men and a leading cause of death. Consistent rectal exams are recommended to detect prostate cancer before it spreads. There is also a lab blood test that can measure the amount of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which is, in normal men, very low. Raised test results might signal disease in the prostate, either prostatitis, bPH or cancer. The PSA test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can lead a physician to investigate with additional tests. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or even surgical procedures. It has just recently been detected that medications including Docetaxel could be useful in treating prostate cancer.
