The prostate is a gland that is an important part of the male sex organs. It is mistakenly called the prostrate gland. Its most primary role is to secrete and then store a see-through fluid that is an important part of seminal fluid (semen). A normal human's prostate gland is somewhat bigger than a shelled walnut. It surrounds the urethra underneath the urinary bladder. It is situated in front of the rectum and a portion of it can be felt while undergoing a rectal exam.

Inflammation of the prostate is a gland that is named prostatitis. If the prostate becomes enlarged it can obstruct the flow of urine, making urination very painful and difficult and in very extreme situations totally impossible. Prostatitis is treated with antibiotics, prostate massage or even operations.

In older-aged men, the prostate can enlarge to the point where urinating becomes difficult or impossible. This is called benign prostatic hyperplasia, commonly termed BPH. It can be treated with different types of medicinal drugs or with operations that removes part of the prostate. One commonplace surgical procedure used in such cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TUR or TURP).

Prostatic cancer is one of the most common cancers to strike older males and a leading cause of deaths. Consistent rectal exams are highly recommended to pick up prostate cancer early. There is also a lab blood test that will measure the amount of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which is, in normal men, quite low. Raised pSA blood results can suggest disorder within the prostate, whether prostatitis, bPH or a cancerous prostate. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can lead your physician to investigate with further tests. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or even surgical measures. It has recently been observed that medications such as Docetaxel may be useful in treating a cancerous prostate.

Stimulating the prostate in males is often compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can cause more powerful sexual climax. Prostate massage or milking refers to massage of the prostate whether for clinical value or primarily for sexual fulfillment.
