The prostate gland is a vital part of the masculine sex organs. The prostate is mistakenly called the prostrate, rather than prostate. Its principle job is to produce and then store a transparent liquid that is a vital part of seminal fluid (semen). A normal human's prostate is a little bit heftier in size than a shelled walnut. It surrounds the urethra underneath the urinary bladder. It is positioned in front of the rectal area and a portion of it can be felt during the course of a rectal exam or evaluation.

Inflammation of the prostate gland is named prostatitis. If the prostate gets too enlarged it can jam up the flow of urine, making urination difficult and very painful and in very extreme instances completely impassable. Prostatitis can often be treated with antibiotics, prostate massage or even surgical procedures.

In men who are older, the prostate can enlarge to the point where urinating is difficult. This is named bPH or benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can be treated with medication or with surgery that removes part of the prostate. One commonplace surgical procedure used in such cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP or TUR).

Prostatic gland cancer is one of the most commonplace cancers that strikes older males and a major cause of death. Consistent rectal exams are highly recommended to find prostate cancer early. There is also a blood test that will measure the amount of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is normally quite low. Raised pSA blood results might be an indicator of disease inside the prostate, whether prostatitis, bPH or prostate cancer. The PSA test cannot distinguish between them, but can cause your physician to investigate even further. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or surgery. It has recently been noted that drugs including Docetaxel are helpful in the treatment of prostate cancer.
