The prostate is really a gland that is a component of the male sexual organs. It is mistakenly called the prostrate. Consistent rectal exams are medically recommended to detect prostate cancer before it spreads. There can be also a blood evaluation that will measure the concentration of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which should normally be very low. Elevated test results might indicate a disease within the prostate, either prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can cause a physician to investigate with additional tests. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or even surgery. It has only recently been detected that drugs like Docetaxel are effective in the treatment of prostate cancer.
