The prostate gland is an important part of the male sex organs. The prostate gland is mistakenly known as the prostrate. The prostate's most primary job is to first produce and then store a transparent fluid that is part of semen. A normal human prostate is slightly greater in size than a shelled walnut. It surrounds the urethra beneath the urinary bladder. It is also situated in front of the rectal region and part of it can be felt during the normal course of a rectal exam.

Inflammation in the prostate gland is referred to as prostatitis. If the prostate becomes enlarged too much it can stop urine flow, making urination difficult and very painful and in severe cases completely impossible. Prostatitis is commonly treated with antibiotic drugs, massage of the prostate or surgical procedures.

In older-aged men, the prostate can enlarge to the point where urinating becomes difficult or impossible. This is called benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH. It can be treated with the use of medication or with even operations that removes part of the prostate. One very typical surgical procedure used in such cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP or TUR).

Cancer of the prostate is one of the most frequent cancers affecting older-aged men and a leading cause of dying. Regular rectal exams are recommended to pick up prostate cancer early. There is also a blood test that can measure the amount of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is also normally quite low. Raised test results can suggest disorder inside the prostate, whether prostatitis, bPH or a cancerous prostate. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can be grounds for your doctor to investigate more thoroughly. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or surgery. It has just recently been noted that medications such as Docetaxel could be helpful in treating cancer.

Stimulating the prostate gland in males has been compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can result in a more powerful sexual climax. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massage of the prostate either for health-related or strictly sexual fulfillment.
