The prostate is really a gland that is an important part of the sex organs of the male. The prostate is mistakenly called the prostrate gland. Its primary function is to secrete and store a transparent fluid that is a vital part of semen, or seminal fluid. A normal human's prostate gland is a bit heftier in size than a walnut. It surrounds the urethra beneath the urinary bladder. It is also located in front of the rectal region and part of it can be felt during a rectal evaluation.

Inflammation of the prostate is a gland that is named prostatitis. If the prostate grows enlarged it can hinder urine flow, making urination very painful and difficult and in severe situations wholly impossible. Prostatitis is treated with antibiotic drugs, prostate massage or even surgery.

In older men, the prostate often enlarges to the point where urinating is difficult. This is commonly known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). It can be treated with the use of prescription medications or with surgery that removes part of the prostate. One common surgical procedure used in these types of cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP or TUR).

Prostate cancer is one of the most frequent cancers that strikes older-aged males and a leading cause of deaths. Consistent rectal exams are medically recommended to find prostate cancer early. There is also also a lab blood test that measures the concentration of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which should normally be quite low. Elevated test results can be an indicator of disease in the prostate, either prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between them, but can be a reason for a physician to investigate with additional tests. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or even surgical measures. It has recently been discovered that medications including Docetaxel may be effective in the treatment of a cancerous prostate.

Stimulation of the prostate in males is often compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can cause more powerful experience of orgasm. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massage of the prostate either for clinical or strictly for sexual purposes.
