The prostate is a gland that is part of the masculine sex organs. The prostate is mistakenly known as the prostrate, rather than prostate. The prostate's main function is to secrete and then store a clear fluid that is a vital component of semen (seminal fluid). A healthy human prostate gland is slightly heftier in size than a walnut. The prostate surrounds the urethra underneath the urinary bladder. It is also located in front of the rectal area and part of it can be felt during the normal course of a rectal exam.

Inflammation of the prostate is a gland that is called prostatitis. If the prostate grows too large it can impede the urine stream, making urination difficult and painful and in extreme cases totally impossible. Prostatitis is commonly treated with antibiotic prescription drugs, prostate massage or even surgery.

In men who are elderly, the prostate may grow to the point where urinating becomes difficult or impossible. This is termed bPH or benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can be treated with medications or with operations that removes a component of the prostate. One commonplace operation used in such cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP or TUR).

Prostatic cancer is one of the most frequent cancers that affects older-aged males and a major cause of death. Regular rectal exams are medically recommended to discover prostate cancer before it spreads. There is also also a laboratory blood evaluation that measures the concentration of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which is, in normal men, very low. Raised bloodwork PSA results may signal disease inside the prostate, whether prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or prostate cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between them, but can lead your physician to investigate with further tests. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or even surgery. It has only recently been uncovered that medicines such as Docetaxel could be helpful in the treatment of prostate cancer.

Stimulating the prostate gland in men is typically compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can lead to more powerful sexual climax. Prostate massage or milking refers to massage of the prostate either for health-related or for strictly sexual purposes.
