The prostate gland is a vital part of the sex organs of the male. The prostate gland is mistakenly known as the prostrate gland. Its most primary function is to produce and store a clear liquid that is a vital component of semen. A normal human's prostate is slightly bigger than a shelled walnut. Inflammation of the prostate is a gland that is called prostatitis. If the prostate becomes too enlarged it can impede the urine stream, making urination difficult and painful and in severe cases wholly impassable. Prostatitis can be treated with antibiotics, prostate massage or even surgery.

In older-aged men, the prostate can enlarge to the point where urination is difficult. This is referred to as bPH/benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can be treated with the use of prescription medications or with surgery that removes a portion of the prostate. One very typical surgical procedure used in such cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP or TUR).

Prostate cancer is one of the most commonplace cancers to affect older-aged men and a major cause of deaths. Consistent rectal exams are highly recommended to pick up prostate cancer in the early stages. There is also also a lab blood test that will measure the amount of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which is, in normal men, very low. Elevated blood PSA results might signify disorder inside the prostate, whether prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or prostate cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can cause a physician to investigate with additional tests. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or even surgical procedures. It has only recently been found that drugs including Docetaxel could be effective in the treatment of cancer.
