The prostate gland is a component of the masculine sex organs. It is mistakenly known as the prostrate gland. The prostate gland's chief function is to first produce and then store a see-through fluid that is an important part of seminal fluid (semen). A healthy man's prostate is slightly larger than a walnut. The prostate surrounds the urethra beneath the bladder. It is also situated in front of the rectal region and part of it can be felt during a rectal exam or evaluation.

Inflammation in the prostate is a gland that is known as prostatitis. If the prostate becomes too enlarged it can obstruct urine flow, making urination painful and difficult and in severe situations entirely impossible. Prostatitis is treated with antibiotics, prostate massage or even surgery.

In older males, the prostate can enlarge to the point where urinating is difficult. This is called benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH. It can be treated with medications or with even surgical procedures that removes a portion of the prostate. One very typical operation used in these types of cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TUR or TURP).

Cancer of the prostate gland is one of the most common cancers to strike older-aged men and a leading cause of deaths. Consistent rectal exams are medically recommended to find prostate cancer in the early stages. There can be also a blood test that measures the concentration of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which should normally be quite low. Elevated test results can highly suggest disease inside the prostate, either prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or prostate cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can be grounds for your doctor to investigate with further tests. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or even surgical measures. It has just recently been discovered that medications including Docetaxel can sometimes be effective in treating a cancerous prostate.
