The prostate is a gland that is a vital component of the male sexual organs. The prostate is mistakenly called the prostrate. Its chief role is to secrete and then store a transparent fluid that is part of semen, or seminal fluid. A sound individual's prostate is a bit bigger in size than a walnut. It surrounds the urethra below the bladder. It is located in front of the rectum and part of it can be felt during the normal course of the rectal part of the exam.

Inflammation of the prostate gland is referred to as prostatitis. If the prostate gets too enlarged it can hinder urine flow, making urination difficult and very painful and in very severe instances completely impassable. Prostatitis can be treated with antibiotics, massage of the prostate or even surgical procedures.

In older males, the prostate may enlarge to the point where urination is difficult. This is referred to as benign prostatic hyperplasia, commonly called BPH. It can be treated with the use of medication or with even surgery that removes a component of the prostate. One very typical operation used in these types of cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TUR or TURP).

Prostatic cancer is one of the most common cancers to strike elderly males and a leading cause of dying. Consistent rectal exams are medically recommended to pick up prostate cancer in the early stages. There is also also a lab blood test that will measure the concentration of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is, in normal men, quite low. Elevated bloodwork PSA results may indicate a disorder within the prostate, whether prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or cancer. The PSA test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can be a reason for your doctor to investigate more. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or even surgery. It has only recently been detected that medicines including Docetaxel can be helpful in the treatment of a cancerous prostate.

Stimulating the prostate in males has been compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can lead to more powerful orgasm. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate either for clinical value or strictly for sexual fulfillment.
