The prostate is a gland that is a vital part of the masculine sexual organs. The prostate gland is mistakenly called the prostrate gland. The prostate gland's principle role is to produce and store a transparent liquid that is a vital part of semen (seminal fluid). A normal individual's prostate is a little bit bigger in size than a walnut. It surrounds the urethra beneath the urinary bladder. It is located in front of the rectal region and a portion of it can be felt during the normal course of a rectal evaluation.

Inflammation of the prostate gland is known as prostatitis. If the prostate becomes too enlarged it can jam up urine flow, making urination very painful and difficult and in severe situations entirely impossible. Prostatitis can be treated with antibiotic medications, prostate massage or even surgical procedures.

In men who are elderly, the prostate may grow to the point where urinating becomes difficult or impossible. This is commonly known as benign prostatic hyperplasia, commonly termed BPH. It can be treated with medicinal drugs or with even surgical procedures that removes a component of the prostate. One very typical operation used in such cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP or TUR).

Prostatic cancer is one of the most commonplace cancers to affect older men and a major cause of death. Consistent rectal exams are highly recommended to discover prostate cancer before it spreads. There is also a blood test that can measure the concentration of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is normally very low. Elevated bloodwork PSA results may be an indicator of disease inside the prostate, whether prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or cancer. The PSA test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can be a reason for a doctor to investigate further. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or surgical measures. It has recently been detected that medications including Docetaxel may be effective in treating prostate cancer.

Stimulation of the prostate gland in men has been compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can cause more powerful experience of orgasm. Prostate massage or milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate either for health-related or just for sexual fulfillment.
