The prostate is a vital part of the sex organs of the male. The prostate gland is mistakenly called the prostrate gland. The prostate's chief job is to produce and then store a see-through liquid that is an important part of semen. A non-diseased human's prostate gland is somewhat bigger in size than a walnut. Inflammation in the prostate gland is called prostatitis. In older-aged males, the prostate may enlarge to the point where urinating becomes difficult or impossible. This is commonly known as benign prostatic hyperplasia, commonly termed BPH. It can be treated with the use of prescription medications or with even surgical procedures that removes a portion of the prostate. One very typical surgical procedure used in these types of cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP or TUR).

Cancer of the prostate is one of the most frequent cancers affecting older-aged males and a major cause of dying. Consistent rectal exams are recommended to find prostate cancer in the early stages. There is also a lab blood test that can measure the amount of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which is, in normal men, quite low. Elevated blood PSA results might highly suggest disease inside the prostate, whether prostatitis, bPH or prostate cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between them, but can cause your physician to investigate more. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or surgical measures. It has recently been detected that drugs such as Docetaxel could be useful in the treatment of cancer.

Stimulating the prostate in males has been compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can lead to more powerful orgasm. Prostate massage or milking refers to massage of the prostate either for clinical or for strictly sexual purposes.
