The prostate is really a gland that is an important part of the male sex organs. The prostate gland is mistakenly known as the prostrate gland. The prostate's leading role is to secrete and then store a see-through liquid that is an important part of seminal fluid. A sound human prostate gland is a little bit larger than a walnut. The prostate surrounds the urethra underneath the urinary bladder. It is located in front of the rectum and part of it can be felt during the normal course of the rectal part of the exam.

Inflammation in the prostate gland is known as prostatitis. If the prostate grows too large it can hinder the flow of urine, making urination very painful and difficult and in very severe instances wholly impassable. Prostatitis is treated with antibiotic prescription drugs, massage of the prostate or surgery.

In men who are older, the prostate often enlarges to the point where urination becomes difficult or impossible. This is commonly known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). It can be treated with different types of medicines or with even surgical procedures that removes a component of the prostate. One commonplace operation used in such cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TUR or TURP).

Cancer of the prostate gland is one of the most commonplace cancers to strike older-aged males and a leading cause of deaths. Regular rectal exams are highly recommended to detect prostate cancer in the early stages. There can be also a laboratory blood test that measures the concentration of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is, in normal men, quite low. Raised blood PSA results can indicate a disorder inside the prostate, whether prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or a cancerous prostate. The PSA test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can be grounds for a physician to investigate even further. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or even operations. It has just recently been discovered that drugs including Docetaxel can sometimes be useful in treating prostate cancer.

Stimulation of the prostate gland in males is often compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can result in a more powerful experience of orgasm. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massage of the prostate whether for health-related or for strictly sexual fulfillment.
