The prostate gland is a vital component of the sex organs of the male. The prostate gland is mistakenly called the prostrate, rather than prostate. The prostate's overriding function is to secrete and store a see-through liquid that is part of semen (seminal fluid). A healthy individual's prostate gland is slightly larger than a walnut. It surrounds the urethra beneath the urinary bladder. It is also located in front of the rectum and a portion of it can be felt during the normal course of the rectal examination.

Inflammation of the prostate gland is termed prostatitis. If the prostate gets too enlarged it can stop up the urine stream, making urination painful and difficult and in very extreme instances totally impossible. Prostatitis can usually be treated with antibiotic prescription drugs, massage of the prostate or surgery.

In elderly males, the prostate can grow to the point where urination becomes difficult or impossible. This is called benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH. It can be treated with different types of medicines or with surgical procedures that removes part of the prostate. One common surgical procedure used in such cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP or TUR).

Prostatic gland cancer is one of the most commonplace cancers to strike elderly men and a leading cause of death. Regular rectal exams are medically recommended to discover prostate cancer early. There is also a laboratory blood evaluation that measures the concentration of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which is normally very low. Elevated blood PSA results might signal disease in the prostate, either prostatitis, bPH or cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between them, but can be a reason for your physician to investigate with additional tests. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or surgical measures. It has just recently been detected that drugs including Docetaxel may be helpful in treating cancer.

Stimulating the prostate gland in men is often compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can cause more powerful orgasm. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massage of the prostate either for clinical value or strictly for sexual purposes.
