The prostate is an important part of the sex organs of the male. The prostate is mistakenly called the prostrate gland. The prostate's leading function is to secrete and then store a see-through fluid that is part of seminal fluid or semen. A non-diseased human's prostate is somewhat larger in size than a shelled walnut. The prostate surrounds the urethra below the urinary bladder. Inflammation in the prostate gland is known as prostatitis. In older men, the prostate can grow to the point where urination is difficult. This is termed benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). It can be treated with different types of medications or with operations that removes a component of the prostate. One common surgery used in such cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP or TUR).

Prostatic cancer is one of the most common cancers to strike older-aged males and a major cause of dying. Consistent rectal exams are highly recommended to detect prostate cancer before it spreads. There can be also a laboratory blood evaluation that can measure the amount of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which should normally be quite low. Elevated pSA blood results can suggest disorder in the prostate, either prostatitis, bPH or prostate cancer. The PSA test cannot distinguish between them, but can lead a physician to investigate further. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or surgical procedures. It has only recently been uncovered that drugs such as Docetaxel may be useful in the treatment of prostate cancer.

Stimulating the prostate gland in men is frequently compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can lead to more powerful sexual climax. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate either for clinical value or primarily for sexual purposes.
