The prostate is really a gland that is part of the male sex organs. The prostate gland is mistakenly known as the prostrate. Its chief function is to secrete and store a see-through fluid that is a vital part of seminal fluid. A normal human prostate is slightly larger in size than a shelled walnut. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra just below the bladder. It is situated in front of the rectal area and part of it can be felt while undergoing a rectal evaluation.

Inflammation of the prostate is a gland that is termed prostatitis. If the prostate grows too enlarged it can impede the urine stream, making urination difficult and very painful and in extreme situations entirely impassable. Prostatitis can usually be treated with antibiotic prescription drugs, prostate massage or surgical procedures.

In elderly males, the prostate often enlarges to the point where urination becomes difficult. This is called benign prostatic hyperplasia, commonly called BPH. It can be treated with different types of medicinal drugs or with surgical measures that removes a component of the prostate. One very typical surgery used in these types of cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TUR or TURP).

Prostatic gland cancer is one of the most commonplace cancers to strike older men and a major cause of deaths. Regular rectal exams are medically recommended to pick up prostate cancer early. There is also also a lab blood test that will measure the amount of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is, in normal men, quite low. Raised pSA blood results might suggest disease in the prostate, whether prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or a cancerous prostate. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between them, but can be a reason for a doctor to investigate more. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or operations. It has just recently been found that medications like Docetaxel may be useful in the treatment of a cancerous prostate.

Stimulating the prostate in men is often compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can result in a more powerful sexual climax. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massage of the prostate either for clinical or primarily for sexual purposes.
