The prostate gland is an important part of the sex organs of the male. The prostate is mistakenly called the prostrate gland. Its main job is to secrete and then store a see-through liquid that is an important part of seminal fluid or semen. A sound human prostate is a bit larger than a shelled walnut. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra beneath the urinary bladder. It is also located in front of the rectal region and part of it can be felt during a rectal exam.

Inflammation of the prostate gland is termed prostatitis. If the prostate grows too large it can jam up urine flow, making urination painful and difficult and in extreme instances wholly impassable. Prostatitis is treated with antibiotics, massage of the prostate or surgery.

In older males, the prostate may grow to the point where urination becomes difficult. This is called bPH/benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can be treated with different types of medication or with surgical measures that removes a component of the prostate. One commonplace surgical procedure used in such cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TUR or TURP).

Prostatic cancer is one of the most commonplace cancers affecting elderly males and a leading cause of deaths. Consistent rectal exams are medically recommended to detect prostate cancer in the early stages. There is also also a blood evaluation that will measure the amount of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which is, in normal men, quite low. Raised pSA blood results might signify disorder in the prostate, whether prostatitis, bPH or cancer. The PSA test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can be grounds for your physician to investigate further. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or even surgical procedures. It has recently been observed that medications such as Docetaxel can be helpful in treating a cancerous prostate.

Stimulation of the prostate gland in men is often compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can result in a more powerful experience of orgasm. Prostate massage or milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate either for clinical or primarily for sexual fulfillment.
