The prostate is an important part of the masculine sexual organs. It is mistakenly called the prostrate gland. Its predominant role is to produce and then store a clear fluid that is a vital component of semen. A normal individual's prostate is a little bit greater in size than a walnut. Inflammation in the prostate is a gland that is referred to as prostatitis. In older-aged men, the prostate can grow to the point where urination is difficult. This is known as bPH/benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can be treated with medications or with surgical measures that removes part of the prostate. One very typical operation used in these types of cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TURP or TUR).

Cancer of the prostate gland is one of the most common cancers that affects older-aged males and a leading cause of death. Consistent rectal exams are highly recommended to find prostate cancer before it spreads. There can be also a blood evaluation that can measure the amount of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which is, in normal men, quite low. Raised blood PSA results can signify disorder within the prostate, either prostatitis, bPH or prostate cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can cause a doctor to investigate even further. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or operations. It has recently been observed that medications like Docetaxel can be effective in the treatment of a cancerous prostate.

Stimulating the prostate gland in men is typically compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can lead to more powerful orgasm. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massage of the prostate whether for clinical value or for strictly sexual fulfillment.
