The prostate gland is part of the male sex organs. The prostate is mistakenly known as the prostrate gland. Its most significant function is to first produce and then store a transparent fluid that is part of semen (seminal fluid). A healthy human's prostate gland is a little bit larger than a shelled walnut. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra underneath the bladder. It is also positioned in front of the rectal area and part of it can be felt during the normal course of a rectal exam.

Inflammation in the prostate gland is termed prostatitis. If the prostate becomes enlarged too much it can hinder the flow of urine, making urination very painful and difficult and in very severe cases wholly impassable. Prostatitis can usually be treated with antibiotic medications, massage of the prostate or surgery.

In older males, the prostate often enlarges to the point where urinating becomes difficult or impossible. This is termed benign prostatic hyperplasia, commonly called BPH. It can be treated with different types of prescription medications or with even surgery that removes part of the prostate. One commonplace surgical procedure used in these types of cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP or TUR).

Prostatic gland cancer is one of the most frequent cancers that affects older men and a major cause of death. Regular rectal exams are highly recommended to detect prostate cancer early. There is also a laboratory blood test that will measure the amount of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which is, in normal men, quite low. Elevated bloodwork PSA results may highly suggest disorder inside the prostate, whether prostatitis, bPH or a cancerous prostate. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can be a reason for a doctor to investigate more thoroughly. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or surgical measures. It has recently been noted that medications like Docetaxel can sometimes be effective in treating cancer.

Stimulating the prostate in men has been compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can lead to more powerful sexual climax. Prostate massage or milking refers to massage of the prostate either for health-related or strictly for sexual purposes.
