The prostate is a gland that is part of the masculine sexual organs. The prostate gland is mistakenly known as the prostrate gland. The prostate gland's predominant job is to produce and store a see-through liquid that is a vital component of seminal fluid or semen. A non-diseased human's prostate is slightly bigger than a shelled walnut. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra just below the bladder. It is also situated in front of the rectal area and part of it can be felt during the course of a rectal exam or evaluation.

Inflammation of the prostate gland is termed prostatitis. If the prostate becomes too large it can occlude the flow of urine, making urination difficult and painful and in severe situations completely impossible. Prostatitis is commonly treated with antibiotic prescription medications, prostate massage or surgical measures.

In men who are older, the prostate often enlarges to the point where urinating becomes difficult or impossible. This is referred to as benign prostatic hyperplasia, commonly termed BPH. It can be treated with medicinal drugs or with even surgery that removes a portion of the prostate. One very typical surgery used in such cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TUR or TURP).

Prostatic gland cancer is one of the most frequent cancers to strike elderly males and a leading cause of death. Consistent rectal exams are highly recommended to discover prostate cancer early. There is also also a laboratory blood test that can measure the amount of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is, in normal men, quite low. Elevated pSA blood results can indicate a disease inside the prostate, whether prostatitis, bPH or cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can lead your physician to investigate further. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or even surgery. It has just recently been found that medications including Docetaxel may be useful in the treatment of a cancerous prostate.

Stimulating the prostate in males has been compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can cause more powerful sexual climax. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massage of the prostate either for clinical or just for sexual fulfillment.
