The prostate is a gland that is part of the masculine sex organs. It is mistakenly called the prostrate, rather than prostate. Its primary role is to secrete and store a transparent fluid that is a component of seminal fluid (semen). A sound individual's prostate gland is a bit greater in size than a walnut. It surrounds the urethra beneath the bladder. It is also situated in front of the rectal area and a portion of it can be felt during the normal course of the rectal examination.

Inflammation in the prostate gland is termed prostatitis. If the prostate becomes enlarged it can occlude the urine stream, making urination very painful and difficult and in severe situations wholly impossible. Prostatitis is commonly treated with antibiotic prescription medications, prostate massage or even operations.

In elderly males, the prostate can grow to the point where urination becomes difficult. This is commonly known as benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH. It can be treated with prescription medications or with surgery that removes a component of the prostate. One very typical surgical procedure used in such cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TURP or TUR).

Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers affecting older-aged men and a major cause of dying. Regular rectal exams are medically recommended to find prostate cancer early. There is also also a laboratory blood evaluation that will measure the concentration of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which should normally be very low. Raised pSA blood results might signal disease inside the prostate, either prostatitis, bPH or cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between them, but can lead a doctor to investigate with further tests. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or surgical procedures. It has recently been noticed that drugs like Docetaxel can sometimes be effective in treating a cancerous prostate.

Stimulating the prostate gland in males is often compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can result in a more powerful experience of orgasm. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massage of the prostate whether for health-related or strictly for sexual purposes.
