The prostate is a component of the male sex organs. The prostate gland is mistakenly called the prostrate. The prostate gland's most paramount function is to produce and then store a clear liquid that is a vital component of seminal fluid or semen. A healthy man's prostate is a little bit bigger in size than a shelled walnut. The prostate surrounds the urethra just below the urinary bladder. It is also positioned in front of the rectal region and a portion of it can be felt while undergoing a rectal examination.

Inflammation in the prostate is a gland that is referred to as prostatitis. If the prostate gets too enlarged it can jam up the urine stream, making urination very painful and difficult and in very severe instances completely impassable. In older men, the prostate may grow to the point where urination becomes difficult or impossible. This is termed benign prostatic hyperplasia, commonly called BPH. It can be treated with the use of medication or with operations that removes a portion of the prostate. One commonplace surgical procedure used in such cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TUR or TURP).

Cancer of the prostate gland is one of the most frequent cancers that strikes older males and a major cause of death. Regular rectal exams are highly recommended to uncover prostate cancer in the early stages. There is also a laboratory blood evaluation that measures the amount of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which is, in normal men, quite low. Raised bloodwork PSA results could suggest disease in the prostate, either prostatitis, bPH or a cancerous prostate. The PSA test cannot distinguish between them, but can be a reason for a doctor to investigate further. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or surgical measures. It has only recently been observed that medicines including Docetaxel can sometimes be useful in the treatment of prostate cancer.

Stimulation of the prostate gland in men has been compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can cause more powerful orgasm. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate either for medical value or primarily for sexual fulfillment.
