The prostate is a vital part of the masculine sex organs. The prostate is mistakenly known as the prostrate, rather than prostate. The prostate's principle role is to secrete and store a transparent fluid that is a vital part of seminal fluid (semen). A sound individual's prostate is slightly greater in size than a walnut. There is also also a laboratory blood test that measures the amount of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which should normally be very low. Raised test results could suggest disease inside the prostate, whether prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can lead your physician to investigate even further. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or even surgery. It has just recently been uncovered that medications such as Docetaxel can be helpful in treating prostate cancer.
