The prostate gland is a vital part of the male sexual organs. It is mistakenly known as the prostrate gland. The prostate gland's paramount job is to secrete and store a transparent fluid that is a component of seminal fluid (semen). A healthy human prostate is a little bit bigger than a walnut. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra underneath the bladder. It is also situated in front of the rectum and a portion of it can be felt during the normal course of the rectal examination.

Inflammation in the prostate gland is called prostatitis. If the prostate gets too enlarged it can stop the flow of urine, making urination very painful and difficult and in severe cases totally impossible. Prostatitis can often be treated with antibiotic prescription drugs, massage of the prostate or surgical measures.

In older males, the prostate can enlarge to the point where urinating becomes difficult or impossible. This is named benign prostatic hyperplasia, commonly termed BPH. It can be treated with different types of medicinal drugs or with even surgical procedures that removes a component of the prostate. One very typical surgery used in such cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP or TUR).

Cancer of the prostate is one of the most common cancers to affect older men and a major cause of death. Regular rectal exams are recommended to pick up prostate cancer before it spreads. There is also also a blood evaluation that will measure the concentration of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which should normally be quite low. Raised test results can highly suggest disease in the prostate, either prostatitis, bPH or cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between them, but can lead a doctor to investigate further. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or surgical measures. It has recently been noticed that medicines such as Docetaxel can sometimes be useful in treating cancer.

Stimulation of the prostate gland in men is frequently compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can lead to more powerful experience of orgasm. Prostate massage or milking refers to massage of the prostate either for clinical or strictly for sexual fulfillment.
