The prostate is a gland that is an important part of the masculine sex organs. The prostate is mistakenly called the prostrate gland. The prostate's predominant function is to produce and store a see-through liquid that is part of semen, or seminal fluid. A normal human's prostate gland is slightly larger than a shelled walnut. It surrounds the urethra just below the urinary bladder. It is located in front of the rectal region and part of it can be felt during the rectal part of the exam.

Inflammation of the prostate is a gland that is referred to as prostatitis. If the prostate becomes enlarged it can hinder urine flow, making urination painful and difficult and in very extreme situations wholly impassable. Prostatitis can be treated with antibiotic prescription medications, prostate massage or even operations.

In older-aged men, the prostate can grow to the point where urination becomes difficult or impossible. This is termed benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). It can be treated with prescription medications or with operations that removes a portion of the prostate. One common surgical procedure used in these types of cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TURP or TUR).

Prostate cancer is one of the most frequent cancers that affects elderly males and a leading cause of deaths. Consistent rectal exams are medically recommended to uncover prostate cancer early. There is also a laboratory blood evaluation that measures the amount of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which can be normally quite low. Elevated blood PSA results may signify disorder in the prostate, whether prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or a cancerous prostate. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between them, but can cause your physician to investigate more. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or even surgical procedures. It has only recently been discovered that medications including Docetaxel can be effective in the treatment of prostate cancer.

Stimulation of the prostate in males is often compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can cause more powerful sexual climax. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate whether for medical value or primarily for sexual purposes.
