The prostate gland is an important part of the male sex organs. The prostate is mistakenly called the prostrate, rather than prostate. Its paramount role is to first secrete and then store a see-through liquid that is part of seminal fluid. A normal individual's prostate is somewhat bigger than a walnut. It surrounds the urethra just below the urinary bladder. It is located in front of the rectal region and a portion of it can be felt during the rectal part of the exam.

Inflammation in the prostate is a gland that is called prostatitis. In men who are older, the prostate may enlarge to the point where urination becomes difficult or impossible. This is referred to as bPH/benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can be treated with different types of medication or with surgery that removes a component of the prostate. One very typical surgical procedure used in these types of cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TURP or TUR).

Prostatic cancer is one of the most frequent cancers that strikes elderly men and a leading cause of dying. Regular rectal exams are medically recommended to detect prostate cancer early. There is also a blood test that will measure the amount of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which should normally be quite low. Elevated bloodwork PSA results may indicate a disease in the prostate, either prostatitis, bPH or prostate cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between them, but can cause your doctor to investigate further. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or surgical procedures. It has just recently been found that drugs including Docetaxel could be helpful in treating a cancerous prostate.

Stimulating the prostate gland in males is typically compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can result in a more powerful orgasm. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massage of the prostate either for medical value or for strictly sexual fulfillment.
