The prostate is a gland that is a vital part of the sex organs of the male. It is mistakenly known as the prostrate, rather than prostate. The prostate gland's principle job is to first produce and then store a clear fluid that is a component of semen, or seminal fluid. A sound human's prostate gland is slightly heftier in size than a shelled walnut. The prostate surrounds the urethra below the urinary bladder. It is also situated in front of the rectal area and part of it can be felt during the course of a rectal examination.

Inflammation of the prostate gland is referred to as prostatitis. If the prostate becomes enlarged too much it can stop the urine stream, making urination very painful and difficult and in extreme cases entirely impossible. Prostatitis is treated with antibiotic medications, prostate massage or surgical procedures.

In older-aged men, the prostate may grow to the point where urination becomes difficult. This is known as benign prostatic hyperplasia, commonly called BPH. It can be treated with the use of prescription medications or with even surgery that removes a portion of the prostate. One common surgery used in such cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP or TUR).

Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers affecting older males and a major cause of deaths. Consistent rectal exams are highly recommended to discover prostate cancer before it spreads. There is also also a lab blood test that can measure the concentration of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is, in normal men, quite low. Raised test results could signify disorder inside the prostate, whether prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or a cancerous prostate. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between them, but can be a reason for a physician to investigate more closely. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or even surgery. It has recently been detected that medicines like Docetaxel are effective in the treatment of prostate cancer.

Stimulating the prostate in men has been compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can lead to more powerful sexual climax. Prostate massage or milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate whether for clinical value or strictly for sexual purposes.
