The prostate is really a gland that is part of the male sexual organs. The prostate gland is mistakenly known as the prostrate gland. The prostate's overriding function is to secrete and then store a transparent fluid that is an important part of semen. A non-diseased human prostate gland is a bit larger than a walnut. In older men, the prostate can grow to the point where urinating is difficult. This is commonly known as benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH. It can be treated with medicines or with surgical procedures that removes part of the prostate. One commonplace operation used in these types of cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TUR or TURP).

Cancer of the prostate is one of the most commonplace cancers to strike older-aged men and a major cause of death. Consistent rectal exams are recommended to find prostate cancer in the early stages. There is also a laboratory blood evaluation that measures the amount of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which can be normally very low. Raised pSA blood results can signal disease within the prostate, either prostatitis, bPH or cancer. The PSA test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can be grounds for a physician to investigate more. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or surgical measures. It has only recently been discovered that medications such as Docetaxel may be useful in treating cancer.
