The prostate is a component of the masculine sex organs. It is mistakenly called the prostrate. Its most important role is to secrete and store a transparent liquid that is a vital part of seminal fluid (semen). A healthy man's prostate is a little bit greater in size than a walnut. In elderly males, the prostate may enlarge to the point where urination is difficult. This is called benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). It can be treated with different types of medicinal drugs or with even operations that removes a portion of the prostate. One commonplace surgical procedure used in these types of cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP or TUR).

Cancer of the prostate gland is one of the most commonplace cancers that affects elderly males and a leading cause of dying. Regular rectal exams are recommended to detect prostate cancer before it spreads. There is also also a blood evaluation that can measure the concentration of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which is, in normal men, very low. Elevated blood PSA results might be an indicator of disorder in the prostate, whether prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or cancer. The PSA test cannot distinguish between them, but can lead your doctor to investigate even further. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or even operations. It has just recently been noted that medications including Docetaxel can sometimes be helpful in the treatment of cancer.
