The prostate is a gland that is a component of the male sexual organs. It is mistakenly known as the prostrate, rather than prostate. Its primary role is to secrete and then store a clear liquid that is a vital part of seminal fluid (semen). A normal human's prostate gland is somewhat larger in size than a shelled walnut. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra just below the bladder. It is situated in front of the rectum and part of it can be felt during the course of the rectal exam.

Inflammation of the prostate gland is called prostatitis. If the prostate becomes enlarged too much it can occlude the flow of urine, making urination difficult and painful and in very severe cases wholly impossible. Prostatitis is treated with antibiotic prescription medications, massage of the prostate or surgical procedures.

In men who are elderly, the prostate can grow to the point where urinating becomes difficult or impossible. This is named benign prostatic hyperplasia, commonly called BPH. It can be treated with different types of medications or with even operations that removes part of the prostate. One very typical surgical procedure used in such cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TUR or TURP).

Prostatic cancer is one of the most frequent cancers affecting older-aged males and a major cause of deaths. Regular rectal exams are medically recommended to uncover prostate cancer before it spreads. There is also a laboratory blood evaluation that will measure the concentration of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which should normally be very low. Raised bloodwork PSA results may indicate a disease inside the prostate, either prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or prostate cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can be grounds for a physician to investigate with additional tests. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or even surgery. It has only recently been discovered that medications like Docetaxel can sometimes be effective in the treatment of a cancerous prostate.

Stimulation of the prostate in men is frequently compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can result in a more powerful orgasm. Prostate massage or milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate either for clinical value or just for sexual fulfillment.
