The prostate is a gland that is a vital part of the masculine sex organs. It is mistakenly called the prostrate gland. Its main job is to produce and then store a clear liquid that is a component of seminal fluid. A normal human's prostate is a little bit bigger than a shelled walnut. It surrounds the urethra underneath the bladder. It is also positioned in front of the rectum and a portion of it can be felt during the normal course of the rectal part of the exam.

Inflammation in the prostate gland is termed prostatitis. If the prostate grows too much in size it can obstruct the flow of urine, making urination very painful and difficult and in very extreme cases entirely impossible. Prostatitis can often be treated with antibiotic prescription drugs, prostate massage or surgery.

In older men, the prostate may grow to the point where urination becomes difficult or impossible. This is termed bPH/benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can be treated with the use of medicines or with surgical procedures that removes a portion of the prostate. One commonplace operation used in such cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP or TUR).

Cancer of the prostate is one of the most common cancers to strike older-aged males and a leading cause of death. Consistent rectal exams are highly recommended to discover prostate cancer early. There is also a laboratory blood test that will measure the concentration of a protein, PSA or Prostate Specific Antigen), which is, in normal men, quite low. Raised pSA blood results can signify disorder within the prostate, either prostatitis, bPH or prostate cancer. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can lead your physician to investigate more. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or operations. It has only recently been found that medicines including Docetaxel can be effective in the treatment of prostate cancer.

Stimulation of the prostate in men is typically compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can cause more powerful experience of orgasm. Prostate massage or prostate milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate either for health-related or primarily for sexual fulfillment.
