The prostate gland is part of the sex organs of the male. The prostate is mistakenly known as the prostrate, rather than prostate. The prostate's most paramount role is to first produce and then store a see-through fluid that is a component of semen, or seminal fluid. A healthy individual's prostate gland is slightly heftier in size than a shelled walnut. The prostate surrounds the urethra beneath the bladder. It is situated in front of the rectal area and part of it can be felt while undergoing the rectal examination.

Inflammation of the prostate is a gland that is called prostatitis. If the prostate grows too large it can impede the urine stream, making urination very painful and difficult and in very severe situations completely impassable. Prostatitis is commonly treated with antibiotics, massage of the prostate or operations.

In men who are older, the prostate can enlarge to the point where urinating is difficult. This is known as benign prostatic hyperplasia, commonly termed BPH. It can be treated with medicines or with operations that removes a component of the prostate. One common surgical procedure used in these types of cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TUR or TURP).

Cancer of the prostate is one of the most commonplace cancers that affects elderly men and a major cause of dying. Regular rectal exams are medically recommended to find prostate cancer before it spreads. There can be also a blood test that can measure the amount of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which should normally be quite low. Elevated bloodwork PSA results could be an indicator of disease inside the prostate, whether prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or a cancerous prostate. The PSA blood test cannot distinguish between these conditions, but can cause a doctor to investigate more. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (preventing testosterone production), radiation or even surgery. It has recently been observed that medications such as Docetaxel can be useful in treating cancer.
