The prostate is really a gland that is an important part of the male sex organs. The prostate gland is mistakenly known as the prostrate. Its paramount job is to produce and then store a clear fluid that is part of semen, or seminal fluid. A normal individual's prostate is slightly greater in size than a walnut. It surrounds the urethra beneath the urinary bladder. It is situated in front of the rectal region and a portion of it can be felt during the course of a rectal exam.

Inflammation in the prostate gland is named prostatitis. If the prostate becomes enlarged it can hinder urine flow, making urination very painful and more difficult and in extreme cases entirely impossible. Prostatitis can usually be treated with antibiotic prescription drugs, massage of the prostate or operations.

In elderly males, the prostate can grow to the point where urinating is difficult. This is known as benign prostatic hyperplasia, commonly termed BPH. It can be treated with different types of medications or with even surgery that removes part of the prostate. One very typical surgery used in such cases is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP or TUR).

Cancer of the prostate gland is one of the most commonplace cancers to strike older men and a major cause of dying. Regular rectal exams are highly recommended to pick up prostate cancer early. There can be also a blood evaluation that measures the amount of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is, in normal men, very low. Raised blood PSA results could be an indicator of disease in the prostate, whether prostatitis, bPH or cancer. The PSA test cannot distinguish between them, but can be grounds for a doctor to investigate with further tests. Prostate cancer is treated with hormone manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or surgical procedures. It has only recently been discovered that medicines like Docetaxel could be helpful in the treatment of a cancerous prostate.

Stimulation of the prostate gland in men is often compared to stimulation of the G spot in females because prostate stimulation can result in a more powerful sexual climax. Prostate massage or milking refers to massaging motions of the prostate whether for medical value or strictly sexual fulfillment.
