The prostate is a component of the masculine sexual organs. It is mistakenly known as the prostrate, rather than prostate. The prostate's most significant function is to secrete and then store a transparent fluid that is a vital component of seminal fluid (semen). A normal human's prostate gland is somewhat larger than a walnut. It surrounds the urethra beneath the bladder. It is positioned in front of the rectal area and part of it can be felt while undergoing a rectal exam.

Inflammation in the prostate is a gland that is termed prostatitis. If the prostate grows too enlarged it can occlude the urine stream, making urination very painful and more difficult and in very extreme situations wholly impossible. Prostatitis can usually be treated with antibiotic medications, massage of the prostate or surgery.

In older-aged males, the prostate may enlarge to the point where urination becomes difficult or impossible. This is commonly known as benign prostatic hyperplasia, commonly called BPH. It can be treated with the use of medicines or with surgery that removes a portion of the prostate. One common operation used in such cases is called transurethral prostate resection (TUR or TURP).

Prostatic gland cancer is one of the most frequent cancers to strike older-aged males and a major cause of death. Regular rectal exams are medically recommended to discover prostate cancer before it spreads. There can be also a laboratory blood evaluation that will measure the amount of a protein, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which should normally be very low. Elevated pSA blood results could signal disorder within the prostate, whether prostatitis, benign hyperplasia or cancer. The PSA test cannot distinguish between them, but can be a reason for a physician to investigate with additional tests. Prostate cancer is treated with hormonal manipulation (prevention of production of testosterone), radiation or even surgical procedures. It has recently been uncovered that drugs including Docetaxel can sometimes be useful in the treatment of prostate cancer.
